Review: Creative Zen 16GB

(November 14th, 2007 - 3:35PM)

* * *
(4 / 5 stars)

Summary

I've expressed my dissatistfaction with iPods for years. Since my iPod bricked on my vacation, I took the opportunity to replace it. I recently received my Creative Zen (16GB model).

It took some time to get ahold of my 16GB Zen, as the stores up here only carry the 4GB and 8GB models. Amazon.com wouldn't ship them to Canada. I was able to order one direct from the Creative website, and it arrived in under a week. Here are my thoughts.

What I like about the Creative Zen 16GB:

Its sound quality.

My main complaint with the iPods are their sound quality. Apple's done a great job of creating a sleek and sexy music player, but has ignored basic requirements such as good sound quality. I was dismayed to hear that even the sixth-generation iPods have lousy sound quality, which was my main reason for getting out of the Appleverse.

I was happy to find that the Creative Zen has excellent sound quality, which is what you'd expect from Creative. At first I wasn't blown out of the water, but the more I listen to the Zen the more I realize its sound quality is quite good. In addition to good overall sound, the Zen has an EQ adjuster which supports both presets and custom settings. It also has a bass boost feature.

Although the Creative Zen doesn't sound as good as iRiver's players (which can only be described as "audiogasmic"), it's certainly well ahead of Apple's. Although I would have appreciated 3D audio support such as SRS WOW, few portable music players have this feature so I'm fine without it.

It can sync with more than one computer.

One of my huge gripes with iPods is that they can only sync with one computer. If you try to plug your iPod into another computer, iTunes will ask if you want to format it. I don't know if Apple is trying to prevent piracy or just make things easy, but I find this really annoying.

The Creative Zen behaves as a portable media player should: it's basically just a hard drive that can play its contents. If you plug it into another computer, you can transfer files onto or off of it without any trouble.

Its form factor.

The Zen is small, light, and attractive. It's got a shiny black front and soft back. I haven't had a chance to use it extensively yet so I can't be sure how tough it is, but it looks like it could take a beating.

The Zen manages to achieve its tiny size despite sporting a 2.5" screen. That's the same size screen as an iPod classic.

My only complaint is that the Zen looks like it was inspired by the iPod. While I understand that Apple is a trendsetter and it's wise to follow in their footsteps, it'll be difficult for any portable media player to surpass the iPod if the design goal is simply to copy it.

Its features.

The Zen is fully loaded. It plays music, video, podcasts, and audiobooks. It has an FM tuner and a voice recorder.

Its capacity.

The Zen comes in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB models. I have the 16GB model, and can easily fit all my music onto it. If that's not enough, it supports SD expansion, so you could buy a 16GB SDHC card and insert it for a total of 32GB. That's a lot for such a tiny flash player.

Its interface.

The Zen's user interface is slick, sleek and much easier to navigate than the iPod's.

Its price.

Despite being so feature-rich, the Zen is competitively priced. I purchased the 16GB Zen, a car charger, and workout armband for $320.06 (although I also got dinged an extra $56.99 for duty). Compare that to the iPod Touch, which the Apple Store prices at $399!

What I dislike about the Creative Zen 16GB:

The lack of availability.

As I mentioned before, it was quite difficult to get a 16GB Creative Zen. I couldn't find one in stores, and Amazon.com wouldn't ship them to Canada. Creative really needs to make it easier for people to purchase their premium players.

It's not as easy to use as an iPod.

I think I took for granted how easy iPods are to use. You just plug them in and they set themselves right up. They automatically sync all your music, videos, playlists and audiobooks. The Zen, although not entirely difficult to use, requires a lot more setup than that.

I was able to get my Zen working quickly, but it took several days of tweaking to set it up the way I wanted it. Compare this to the hour or so it takes to set up an iPod.

Although the Zen is a great device, it's certainly not one you should buy unless you're comfortable with technology.

It's unstable.

The Zen sync software crashes constantly. I found out that WinAMP can sync the Zen (a possibly killer combination), but unfortunately their integration was buggy too. I'm not sure if it's a problem with my computer or with my software. I suspect both.

I would recommend ignoring the Zen sync software altogether and just syncing files manually.

Its weak playlist support.

Although the Zen supports playlists, it's somewhat difficult to sort them, and I don't know if you can create smart playlists like in iTunes.

It's hard to find good accessories.

I was able to find a decent workout armband, but unfortunately the Zen doesn't have the same library of accessories as the iPod. I couldn't find an integrated car charger and FM transmitter. However, I was able to set up an acceptable solution.

The screen is smudge-prone.

This isn't a huge problem, as wiping the screen will clear it up.

Conclusion

Although the Zen isn't an iPod killer (I think the Zune is better suited to that title), its form factor and feature set make it a great portable media player. Although it has its flaws (most pertaining to stability and ease of use), it addresses all the problems I had with my iPod, so I'm happy with it.

I highly recommend the Creative Zen to anyone who wants higher sound quality and more features than iPods provide. However, if ease of use is your concern, you're still better off with an iPod.

Hi,
Thanks for the detailed review. I just wanted to ask which province you are in, because I live in Canada too.

I'm thinking of getting the 16GB one as well and I'm not sure if I will get duty tax as well. Thanks :)

This is the one I want, too. I also live in Canada.

What exactly is the playlist like? That's the one last deciding factor for me.

By the way, that's so much for posting this. It's incredibly helpful!

This device is quite interesting. The only thing that concern's me is that the menus are quite slow to navigate (I saw some videos on youtube but I did not used the Zen myself).

Is there any way to speed the menu navigation ? Like disabling the transitions and animations ?

Thanks !
November 23, 2007
@Tiffany: I live in BC, and I got charged duty. I don't know what your case would be.

@Thomas: The playlists are basically just a list of files. You can't sort them by artist, title, or anything. Although you can sync your WinAMP playlists, as I mentioned I had difficulty syncing with WinAMP.

@Frederic: I found the menu system quite quick. I had no problem with it. In fact, I didn't even notice any transitions or animations.

Great little review - thanks!

What is start up time like? Does it get worse as you fill up the 16gb?

I understand that the SD card acts like a separate drive and is not integrated. However, can you play all content on an SD card eg like random play?

Thanks again

Paul
November 30, 2007
@Paul: The startup time is actually very quick. It's perfectly reasonable. I'm not sure if it gets worse as you fill up the 16GB.

I also heard about the SD card issue. As you mentioned, any SD card you install in the Creative Zen will be treated as a separate drive, NOT integrated into your main music library. I've heard that there's no way to browse the files on the SD card by ID3 tag, so you have to browse the directory structure on the SD card.

That being said, I haven't yet used an SD card in my Zen. My music library is about 10GB, so the 16GB of storage built in is plenty for my music library plus some video. However, if I do expand, I'm planning to put my main music library on the device itself, and any video or podcasts on the SD card.

The SD card issue shouldn't be a problem if you're like me, and can fit your music library into the 16GB player without expansion. However, if you have 20GB of MP3s, this might be a problem because you'll have to split up your library.

As far as the shuffle across built-in memory and SD card question goes, I unfortunately have no experience with that.

Hi Steve,

Snow in BC : 0
I just bought the 8GB model. Got impatient...anyway, another SD card question. It looked likes there is already a card in the SD slot, a bit of reading indicates it comes with a dummy card. Try as might I cannot pull it out. It sits flush with with the top of the player.

In my other player the card stuck out a little so I could pull it out. Did your's come with a dummy card, does it stick out, am I missing something? Thanks.
December 3, 2007
@Sandy: Try pushing the card in and it'll pop out.
Damien
December 3, 2007
I bought the 8 G Zen model. At first I loved it but it has been getting to be a pain.

Wow does it ever crash allot. It will lock up and you have to get a tiny pin to reset the device. A few fellow Creative users have had the same problem. They say to use an older version of the firmware.

Don't even load the software. Seems to make moving files around tough on your computer. It shouldn't be as it's not an ipod.

No basic file browsing. I know it's old school but sometimes it's hard to figure out what a song is called but you know what folder it's in. Just seems like a simple thing that doesn't need to be removed.

Hi Steve,

thanks for the quick reply. I guess I was a little too gentle, didn't want to harm my new baby : ) My trip to work this morning speed by while I was playing with her. Thanks again.
December 4, 2007
@Damien: You're right, it does crash a lot. And having to use a paperclip to reset it is really stupid. However, I find that since I upgraded to the latest firmware, I haven't been having that problem.

16GB Creative Zen is now widelyh available at Futureshop or Best Buy for $179.99 Canadian!!! Up to date firmware (had to use Recovery COnsole a few times - for trouble resolution, Creative's knowledgebase is better than Google searches). I love this thing. I put Coast to Coat am files on it and I'll be Remote VIewing in no time! :) Got some trainig videos for that too!
Peter
December 4, 2007
Sorry, I meant the 8GB version (see last post).
December 5, 2007
@Peter: That's an important distinction. As far as I know, the 16GB Creative Zen is not yet available at Future Shop or Best Buy.

December 7, 2007
how is the video quality on this. ive been having a hard decision whether to go with this or the new zune 80 and my final decision is gonna be based on the screen quailty.
Vincent
December 15, 2007
BTW, THEY HAVE a 32GB ZEN ALSO! :)
December 15, 2007
@Leo: The video quality is very good. I seem to recall hearing that it has 16 million colours, whereas the Zune has far less. I've noticed a few video podcasts I've downloaded have been stuttering (The Totally Rad Show and Diggnation), but I'm not sure if that's my Zen's fault or the fault of the podcast encoder.

@Vincent: The 32GB Zen is quite a ways off for us.

i'm hearing all these great reviews about the creative zen. is it only certain models that work fine and other are crap, like the 30GB. my boyfriend bought a 30gb which didn't work. it took the company 2 montsh to send him a new one and they wanted to charge him 30$ for sending them their broken product. then, he got his new 30gb and that worked fine for 5 days, until he had to recharge it and now it's not working again. he previously had a 8gb zen which worked perfectly fine. is that just pure bad luck or do the 30gb have some serious defect?
December 16, 2007
@marya: Okay, hold on a second. We're talking about the new Creative Zens, which are black and about the size of a credit card. There's no 30GB version of these new Zens (although there is apparently a 32GB version that hasn't reached North American shores).

Are you talking about the new Creative Zen, or are you talking about an older model such as the Zen Vision:M?
Marc
December 19, 2007
Hi, I am also from Canada and I was wondering if you can get the 16GB model in a Canadian store, if so tell me where. I was also wondering which model would be the best one: the 8GB or the 16GB zen? Thanks alot for posting this add, it helped me alot.
Steve Kwan
December 20, 2007
@Marc: As far as I know, you can't get the Zen 16GB in Canada. HOWEVER: You can still get it if you order it online directly from Creative. I highly recommend the 16GB model, although this depends very much on the size of your music/video collection. I have a lot of MP3s and I like to put videos on my Zen, so 16GB was what I needed.
Travis
December 20, 2007
Thanks for posting about the zen. I was almost sold on the new vision w untill I saw how large it is! (think a good sized paperback novel!). Then I saw the zen at the same display and through checking up on the net found your review here. I think I've found my muvo replacement!
December 21, 2007
@Travis: No worries. The Zen's definitely worth your time.
Marc
December 23, 2007
Hi it's me again. Thanks for the quick reply. I was still wondering how much did the shipping cost, and what was the price for the player all together? Just wondering, thanks.
Kevin
December 25, 2007
The only thing I found out that it doesn't have light-up on the buttons as like the Zen V and Zen V Plus or the Zen Vision W.

I wonder why.
December 29, 2007
@Marc - I don't remember how much shipping was - Creative will tell you that when you order the player. I ordered it express, so it was a bit more expensive. I would guess it was around $30. But the big hit was on the duty, which was about $60.

@Kevin - That's true, the buttons aren't illuminated. But that doesn't bother me, because they're easy to find by feel. A lot of the time I manipulate the buttons when they're in my pocket anyway, so the most important thing for me is being able to find them by touch.

I can't seem to get the memory card to accept files from the computer. When I set the Zen on memory card and plug it in it goes to "docked".
January 2, 2008
@Doug: Wish I could help you, but I have no experience with SD cards in the Zen. I just use the onboard memory.

January 2, 2008
Thanks Steve. I think the problem may be in "synchronizing" whatever that is. I am digging around in the internet to see what I can find and may go and torment the geeks at Best Buy after a bit. Managed to get the Rubaiyat Of Omar Khayyam and King Lear to play. Wonderful gadget.
Doug
Thanks

I got one of these for my wife. I also use Winamp to rip and store CD's onto the hard disk. I assume that you're using the Winamp Zen plugin to sync between your Zen and PC?
January 3, 2008
@Doug: Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

@Steve N: I just used WinAMP's default Zen support. If there's an extra WinAMP Zen plug-in, I know nothing about it. I attempted to use WinAMP to manage my Zen, encountered problems, and reverted to the Zen synchronization software. Also, thanks for calling yourself "Steve N" to disambiguate our names. :)
Steve N
January 3, 2008
Don't worry about it. I'm a big fan of AAC instead of MP3, and I've been trying to copy over my ripped albums to my Zen (they all have the .m4a suffix). So far, if I use ITunes to rip to .m4a, it will be quite fine in terms of copying over to my device. I'm investigating what audio codecs the Zen is looking for instead of what comes default with Winamp.

I haven't had any problem with the ripping to MP3 and getting it to my device, only my AAC albums.
Tony
January 14, 2008
Hey I was wondering if the screen/resolution was clear enough to play videos that have subtitles on them and still be able to read them? Thanks
January 14, 2008
@Tony: There's absolutely no way you'd be able to read subtitles on the Zen. It has the same screen size as an iPod Classic.
Katty
January 14, 2008
There's some thing that anybody mentions and is about the FM radio, on the Vision M we were able to record songs live from a show or the entire show and so, but do this new model keeps that characteristic?
Cath
January 16, 2008
If you get a larger capacity zen, do they accept larger capacity sd cards? the 4gb zen only takes up to 4gb sd card, the 16 zen takes 16 sd...??
Thanks
January 16, 2008
@Katty: I've experimented with the FM radio and I can't find a way to record FM transmission. That being said, I've found the FM interface confusing and I could just be missing it.

@Cath: The Zen doesn't advertise this, but all models should be able to accomodate up to 16GB SD cards. The Zen supports the SDHC standard, meaning that any SDHC card should be usable. Note that I said should. There could be compatibility problems, so you might want to test with the card before you buy it.
Cath
January 17, 2008
Steve, when you say you paid $56.99 for duty, I assume that was your PST, GST, and delivery charge from Creative?
Being from Ontario, I also cannot find an online retailer willing to ship to Canada - Any idea why Amazon.com and Amazon.ca sell different things-ie; on .com you can buy mp3, but on .ca you cannot??
Thanks
Travis
January 18, 2008
Well I went and purchased the 8GB model zen, love it. The sound reproduction is awesome, clear, and I have to say I think it's even better than my old MuVo. The interface is pretty slick, just having some growing pains getting used to it. One thing that I can't quite seem to find tho.

The screen only seems to dim when not in use instead of shutting off completely to help extend the battery life. I gave it a full charge and the advertised 18 hours of playtime didn't happen. I got about a full 8 hour day or so out of the player just playing music. The brightness I had turned down all the way to minimum. Is there something I'm missing? I didn't bother upgrading the firmware on the unit yet so perhaps there's another option in the new release?
George
January 21, 2008
Travis, i was having the same thought then i realised that if you put the player on hold (pushing the power button up) after selecting your song/playlist etc the screen will shut off in a few seconds.

I've got the 8GB zen and i love it!!!
just a shame the files on the SD card don't intergrate with the main library...you never know there may be firmware released in the future solving this.
Travis
January 21, 2008
@George
Thanks for that! Just seems a bit on the hokey side that you have to lock the player for the screen to turn off. Makes putting it in your pocket and wanting to skip a song without having to pull it out, flip the lock switch, skip songs, relock... etc... kind of a pain. Guess that's how they get the 18 hours of song time tho.
January 23, 2008
@Travis: I felt the same way. Having to put your player on hold to turn the screen off is kind of stupid. On the other hand, I rarely put the thing on hold and it still manages to get excellent battery life with the screen on.
Rob M
January 24, 2008
Honestly, I haven't had my Zen for more than a week, and it crashes alot, but that doesn't concern me much... But how can I put videos on it?... Going through the downloading videos and converting them? What's the easiest thing step by step?
January 25, 2008
@Rob M: Out of the box, the Zen certainly does crash a lot. I had the same problem. Fortunately, Creative has been releasing firmware updates that correct this problem. Just run the Creative Software AutoUpdate program that comes with the Zen and you should have less crashes. Alternately, you can download the Zen update file from the Creative website.

As far as putting videos on it, Creative's software seems to work very well for this. The Zen comes with a Creative Video Converter that does a great job. In Windows Explorer, select ZEN Media Explorer and you should see a "Convert Video" option in there.

January 26, 2008
Steve,
I was thinking of using one of these to also back up photos while travelling. Am wondering if you have tried this function. A few questions:
1) Does the USB interface support syncing with a digital camera?
2) It sounds like it has room for 2 SD cards? I assume you could put the SD card from camera in 1 port and transfer to the other card?

January 28, 2008
@Court Wade: I'm not sure how well-suited the Zen would be for your purposes. I don't know if the USB interface explicitly supports syncing with a digital camera, but I do know that the Zen basically acts as a USB flash drive. So although it may not work with syncing software, you should be able to copy files onto it.

Also, I believe you're misinformed: there is only one SD slot in the Zen.
Larry Kelly
January 30, 2008
How is the Zen for podcasts? I've been using an RCA Lyra but it only lets you pause for a minute or so and then shuts off. It does not remember where you were when it stopped. This is a nuisance because I am constantly interrupted while I am listening and many pocasts are over an hour long. My choice of MP3 player is now between the flash-based Zune and the Zen 16 GB.
January 31, 2008
@Larry Kelly: The Zen is excellent for podcasts. It calls them ZENcasts for some reason (I wonder why), and it does remember where you stopped them.

Well I picked up three 8GB for the kids for Christmas, but do you think I can find cases for them anywhere. I can get skins at futureshop,, and thats it, short of ordering direct from creative, and that really floors me. $400.00 for three at The Source by Circuit City, and they can't even stock a skin much less a case....
anyone, anyone? HELP ME
February 6, 2008
@Moe: I'm not surprised at your plight. Most major retailers are spending too much space stocking iPod accessories to worry about other players.

You can order stuff like this off of the Creative website, and they're very quick to deliver. I live in Vancouver, Canada and I got my deliveries from them in about two business days.

February 7, 2008
I was my local walmart the day I made my MP3 player decision and found I was very turned off by the looks of the Zen(stone?) stocked there and spent my money on the 30GB Zune, I find it to be veeeery good for MP3 and videos. The large screen makes navigating my library fast and easy though I seem to be at a loss as to how to use all 30 gigabytes. I just noticed how some people were asking about the Zune and there was no real feedback so.. heres my opinion of it.
February 8, 2008
@Banjo: We're not talking about the Zen Stone. That's an older model. We're talking about the new Zen (and yes, perhaps Creative did a bad job of naming this new product). The new one is black, shiny and has the length/width of a credit card. People generally consider it attractive, although I could understand why you might not.

The Zune was also very appealing to me. When I was looking for a new player, I was very tempted to buy the second generation Zune, but I wound up going for the Zen because it's solid-state and it's much smaller.

All the same, thanks so much for your opinion! I hope it helps people decide on their next player.
February 8, 2008
Hm. Not long ago, I found this same exact article elsewhere.

Either someone's plagiarized you, or visa versa.

Might wanna check into that. (c:

February 8, 2008
I also like the zen. However I wanted a bigger hard drive. I noticed now that they have a 32 gig. that would be enough. When I searched on ebay I noticed there wer 60 and even 120 gig models. what gives?
thanks
February 8, 2008
I believe it, Steve.

Your site seems too genuine, too personal, to even resemble a plagiaristic web site. I apologize for the (largely unintended) hint of accusation embedded in my previous comment.

And hey...do you really hate Apple that much?

All the best.
February 9, 2008
@shane: Apparently the Zen was just released in a 32GB model. If you saw 60GB or 120GB models, those were likely previous incarnations of the Zen. Creative has done a somewhat crappy job on product naming, as prior to their new Zen they had released several other Zen-ly named products, such as the Zen Vision and the Zen Stone. The product we're talking about here, and the one you saw in a 32GB model, is the Creative Zen which is about the size of a credit card and is shiny black.

@ibcarlos: Hey, I'm just flattered that someone thinks my content is worth plagiarizing. I Googled some terms from this article and couldn't find any other page publishing it, so you might be mistaken. And I don't really hate Apple, I'm just not their target market.

Something that I find slightly frustrating about the play modes.

I'll listen to an album in its entirety from beginning to end. Then I'll set the "DJ" to play random songs from the entire library. Then I want to listen to a particular album from beginning to end again, and it randomizes the play list. The only way I can determine to set it to play the songs sequentially seems to be to go into the settings tab, then the audio settings, and set it back to regular play mode from "shuffle". It seems to go to that setting off of a cue from the "DJ" service. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way around it? Or is it a "live with it" feature?
February 13, 2008
@Travis: Hmm...I never noticed that, but then again I wasn't really paying attention.

February 15, 2008
I just bought the new Creative Zen. Everytime i go to turn it on, i just get a blank white screen, but i'm still able to play music if i guess where the music screen is. I'm just wondering if someone could help me out with this. I've tried updating the firmware, and still, it seems to do this. Is there something else i should be updating? Could someone give me a website that i could go to update the firmware so i know i'm downloading the right one?

thanks :o)
February 18, 2008
@Kala: That sounds like a defective Zen. I've never had that problem. I'd recommend returning it.

I just wanted to let people know that I got the Zen 32GB delivered to my house today. I ordered it from Creative only 3 days ago so that was great service (I used the lowest price shipping option which was still $34.26). The price for the Zen 32GB was $299. I was worried what the import duties would be (I live in Toronto), but I was pleasantly surprised to find I was only charged GST and PST.

I got my wife a Zen 8GB for Christmas and was really impressed and wanted one for myself. Originally I was going to get the Zen 16GB ($199 directly from Creative), but couldn't resist going all the way to 32GB.

Hi:
I lost my IRiver, which had great sound even if the pics wern't great. I bought the Vision M 60GB and liked it quite a lot but returned it because I couldn't record FM which I used a lot with the IRiver. On the Vision M 30GB firmware I understand they had taken the FM record off then put it on again. I've had and returned two of those and neither will work at all.

Does the new Zen have the FM record capability? Someone asked earlier but no one gave a definitive answer.
Paul
February 26, 2008
@Paul C: I can tell you with a high degree of certainty that the Creative ZEN does not have the ability to record FM.
Paul
February 26, 2008
The Zen 16GB is great, the updates to software and firmware have stopped the issues of it freezing. But what software besides Itunes, can convert say FLAC or other lossless format to AAC? I've been using winamp and converting to 320KBps files because there is not lossless support with the Zen, and I can't get the AAC to work, and I'm unwilling to become an Itunes convert.

February 27, 2008
@Paul: The transcoding you are asking about is commonly done with software called BeSweet. There is a gui frontend for it called BeLight. Do a google search for it, you'll see that it is well documented in the audio/video community. Good luck.

The question here is how to clean the screen. Creative puts that sticky cardboard covering on top to protect the screen in its packaging but peel it off and it leaves all this goo on top that attracts all the dust and gunk.

Question here:

All of a sudden concerning my new Creative Zen 4 gb version : Windows Explorer no longer lists the music that is in the Music directory of the Zen.

However it can see the video files in the video section.

What happened and what do I have to do next ?

I can still copy files into the Music section but still cannot see them in Windows explorer. However, they do show up on the Zen screen when going to select music files for playing.

thank you.

I am very very confused about the SD card feature of the creative zen lab...I can drag music into the zen onto the sd card, but when I try to play it...it states there is no license for the music, scrolls through on its own and thats it. Why does the music not play?

How does the Zen look like it was inspired by the ipod?

@Zen4: I didn't have the problem with the sticky screen. You could try wiping it down with a microfibre cloth and maybe some Windex. Be careful with the screen though, as it can scratch. As for the files not appearing in Windows Explorer, I didn't have that problem, but you might want to consider updating the firmware.

@Jonathon: I don't know anything about the SD card feature.

@Paul: Well, it's black, it's shiny, and it has a different back texture than front texture. I'm not saying it looks bad, and I'm not saying that being inspired by the iPod is a bad thing. Almost all players out there these days are inspired by the iPod. At least Creative didn't add a touch control like many other players.

hi... im just wondering if i have to use ITunes to transfer music to the creative zen? i'm interested in buying one but use WinAmp... can i just transfer my music files from Winamp directly to the Zen... or is it more complicated than this??? I really don't like ITunes and would hate to have to use it instead if Winamp...

We are members of Audible Books and download about 18+ books per year onto CDs which we use in our CD player when we are walking each day.

We are considering changing from a CD Player to either a Creative Zen or an Ipod, because we are concerned about the number of CDs we are burning for each book.

We can't find how much space an average book takes when downloaded onto a Creative Zen 8GB. We are also interested in putting books onto the SD card so both my husband and I can listen to the book.

Has anyone had any experience with Audible Books and the Creative Zen.

I'm also concerned because I have heard that their are some problems with compatablity with Vista which is the operating system on my computer. It works fine with Audible Manager for burning CDs, but I wonder about loading books onto the Creative Zen.

We are older and not as knowledgeable about technology as you.

@Jenny: I'm also an Audible user and I load books onto my ZEN all the time.

Most Audible books are about 100MB per part (you may have noticed that some of the books are broken into multiple parts). For example, I'm currently listening to a book that's just shy of 8 hours, and it takes about 110MB of space on my ZEN.

So assuming that your books are only one part, and you buy an 8GB ZEN, that means you'll have enough space for 80 books on there at a single time. That's probably more than enough. And bear in mind that once you're done with a book, you can delete it from your ZEN to clear up space. You can always re-download the books from Audible later.

Thank you for your reply to my question. The information you provided has been helpful in making our decision. One more question, what format did you use to download your books from Audible, 2, 3, or 4?

Thanks again.

@Jenny: I use format 4.

I just bought an 8G, and it is working perfectly but some sites tell me to install the latest firmware. I have no idea what it does.

Thanks.
