A note about the Badger algorithm

(September 24th, 2006 - 12:53PM)

Yes, I know it leaks memory. That's by design. I think it's how the creator of BadgerBadgerBadger would have wanted it. This way, my computer feels the same way as I do after watching it for many iterations.

The Badger algorithm

(September 24th, 2006 - 3:08AM)

Here's some proof that I'm a geek: I wrote BadgerBadgerBadger as a C++ program.

#include <iostream>
#include <string>
using namespace std;

class Badger
{
    public:
        Badger() {cout << "Badger" << endl;}
};

class Mushroom
{
    public:
        Mushroom() {cout << "Mushroom" << endl;}
};

class Snake
{
    public:
        Snake() {cout << "Snake" << endl;}
};

void badgerBadgerBadger()
{

    bool first = true;

    while (1)
    {
        if (!first)
        {
            for (int i=0; i<12; i++)
            {
                Badger *badger = new Badger();
            }
            for (int i=0; i<2; i++)
            {
                Mushroom *mushroom = new Mushroom();
            }
        }

        for (int i=0; i<12; i++)
        {
            Badger *badger = new Badger();
        }

        for (int i=0; i<3; i++)
        {
            for (int i=0; i<2; i++)
            {
                Mushroom *mushroom = new Mushroom();
            }
            for (int i=0; i<11; i++)
            {
                Badger *badger = new Badger();
            }
        }

        Snake *snake = new Snake();

        if (first) first = false;
    }

}

int main(int argc, char* argv[])
{
    badgerBadgerBadger();
    return 0;
}

Beautiful dawn

(September 22nd, 2006 - 11:08PM)

High: A fantastic song by James Blunt.

Beautiful dawn
Lights up the shore for me
There is nothing else in the world
I'd rather wake up and see with you
Beautiful dawn
I'm just chasing time again
Thought I would die a lonely man
In endless night
But now I'm high
Running wild among all the stars above
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me
Beautiful dawn
Melts with the stars again
Do you remember the day when my journey began?
Will you remember the end of time?
Beautiful dawn
You're just blowing my mind again
Thought I was born to endless night
Until you shine high
Running wild among all the stars above
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me
Will you be my shoulder
When I'm gray and older?
Promise me tomorrow starts with you getting high
Running wild among all the stars above
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me
High
Running wild among all the stars above
Sometimes it's hard to believe you remember me

That last photo of Beth was a bit far out, so I'll equalize it by posting a normal one. This is from last weekend at the Yaletown Brewery.

How to tell if a Web 2.0 company is doomed from the start

(September 13th, 2006 - 10:13PM)

You ask: "How do you plan to make money?"

They answer: "Advertisements."

Everyone seems to think that setting up a free website and filling it with ads is a substitute for a sound business plan. News flash: The economy can't be powered by Google AdSense alone. If you really want your company to make money, it might be prudent to provide a service that people will actually pay for.

My triumphant return to BCIT

(September 12th, 2006 - 9:43PM)

After a long time out of virtual class and an even longer time out of the real deal, I'm back at BCIT. Don't call it a comeback. I've been here for years.

Tonight I went to my new class, Entrepreneurial Management. The instructor's a really nice guy, but he seems more like a motivational speaker than a teacher. His enthusiasm is a great way to start the course, but I really hope the sales pitch doesn't encompass the entire curriculum.

In tonight's class, I learned that starting my own business is a great way to solve all my problems and fulfill my lame-ass destiny. So far I'm convinced. Now I just have to learn how to do it. I guess that'll take me the rest of the term.

Notes to put in a time capsule to the Steve Kwan of 2043

(September 12th, 2006 - 4:18PM)

  • If time travel has been invented, please come back and visit me.
  • Are you bald yet?
  • I've been building Steve Kwan dot com almost entirely out of XML. Is that a decision I'm going to regret when I get to my millionth post?
  • Right now there's a "Web 2.0" movement going on. It's basically just a buzzword touted by a bunch of fame-seeking windbags. Remember that? Are you up to Web 42.0 yet? Do Web 42.0 sites use 100pt font?
  • I've been browsing OkCupid to look for dates. I apologize in advance.
  • Have I finally finished my BCIT degree?
  • Has Canada been annexed into the United States yet? If so, do not vote for George Bush Jr. Jr.! His plan to invade Scotland will go horribly wrong.
  • What's it like being a trillionaire who's married to Jennifer Connelly Jr.?

Review: Little Miss Sunshine

(September 2nd, 2006 - 1:34AM)

Little Miss Sunshine
I almost didn't recognize Steve Carell with all the facial hair.

* * * * 1/2
(4.5 / 5 stars)

One sentence summary: Like Napoleon Dynamite, but not as dry.

While I was watching Litle Miss Sunshine, I couldn't help but be reminded of Napoleon Dynamite.

The two movies have a lot in common. They're both dry comedies. They both have protagonists that are kind of pathetic and make you feel sorry for them. And they both end with a dance sequence. The big difference is that Little Miss Sunshine is a lot funnier.

Napoleon Dynamite was a good movie, but the humour was so subtle that a lot of people missed it. No such mistake will be made with Little Miss Sunshine. It starts off on a depressing note, and at first I wasn't sure if this movie would be legitimately funny or would be one of those "art" comedies that's really just depressing. But it turned around quickly.

The cast did a great job, and the movie also does a great job of illustrating just how creepy child beauty pageants are. This is a movie that's sad in a lot of ways, but it's also a great movie about the importance of family during the hard times.
